Frequently asked questions
- What is straw marquetry?
- Straw marquetry is a decorative art that involves flattening, splitting and assembling strands of rye straw to compose patterns. Natural straw has a satin sheen that catches the light depending on the angle at which it is laid, giving the pieces their distinctive depth. Every Atelier Mayati creation is made entirely by hand.
- Are your pieces unique?
- Yes. Each artwork and each piece of jewellery is unique and handmade. Slight variations in shade, pattern or dimensions from one piece to another are normal and part of the handcrafted character of straw marquetry.
- Is the straw dyed?
- The colours come both from the natural shade of the rye straw and from straw dyed in the mass. The colours are stable over time provided the piece is kept away from direct, prolonged sunlight.
- How do I care for a straw marquetry piece?
- Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth, or a soft brush for textured areas. Avoid water, household products, excessive humidity and direct, prolonged sun exposure. For jewellery, take it off before washing your hands, bathing or applying perfume.
- Are the artworks (portraits, compositions, furniture) for sale?
- Some original artworks are available for purchase. When this is the case, an “Acquire this artwork” panel appears on the artwork’s page. As these are unique pieces, the sale is arranged directly: simply contact the studio to discuss it.
- How do I buy a piece of jewellery from the shop?
- Go to the jewellery page, select your delivery zone (France or Europe), then pay online by bank card. Payment is secured by Stripe and the order is confirmed by email.
- Is online payment secure?
- Yes. Payments are processed by Stripe, a recognised payment provider. Your card details are encrypted and are never stored by Atelier Mayati.
- What are the delivery times and costs?
- Within France: Mondial Relay home delivery for €4.99 (3 to 5 business days) or Colissimo home delivery for €5.49 (48 hours). Across Europe (European Union, Switzerland and United Kingdom): Colissimo for €14.99 (around 5 days). Times are counted after dispatch and shown at checkout; full details are in our terms of sale.
- How does a made-to-order commission work?
- Choose the made-to-order option offered in the shop and pay for it: this payment reserves the creation. The studio then gets back to you to define the details together (base, colours, pattern) before making the piece. Please note: as made-to-order creations are personalised, they are not subject to the right of withdrawal.
- Can I return an item?
- For shop jewellery, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal after receipt, in accordance with the law. Personalised made-to-order creations, however, cannot be returned (except in the event of a defect). Full details are set out in our terms of sale.
- Do you offer straw marquetry classes?
- Yes. The studio offers introductory classes and workshops. The formats, levels and locations are presented on the Classes page of the site.
